The Higher Education HIV and AIDS Programme (HEAIDS) will host a conference titled -Taking Responsibility: Reflections on HIV and AIDS responsiveness in Higher Education from the 28–30 March 2010 at the Sandton Sun Hotel.  The purpose of the conference is to share local and international research findings and good practice in the field of HIV and AIDS and thereby inform and shape the future direction of the sector’s response to HIV and AIDS.   In addition to showcasing the sector level research commissioned under the HEAIDS Programme, a call for abstracts will be issued to all public higher education institutions to facilitate presentation of research and good practice undertaken in the field of HIV and AIDS in the thematic areas: curriculum, workplace programmes, prevention and responsive institutional programmes.   For further enquiries please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) published a report on its third national HIV survey on 9 June 2009. According to the report, South Africa’s HIV epidemic has levelled off at a prevalence of 10.9% for people aged two years and older, with 5.2 million people estimated to be living with HIV in 2008. HIV prevalence has also declined among children aged 2-14, from 5.6% in 2002 to 2.5%in 2008, and a decline in new infections has also been noted among teenagers aged 15 – 19. Communication will move into high gear over the next few months as the outcomes of various projects will be shared with institutions and other stakeholders. In order to prepare for this, HEAIDS convened a national meeting of HIV/AIDS co-ordinators and corporate communications managers from institutions countrywide. Fifty delegates representing all 23 HEIs attended the workshop at the end of March. [Read More]
 
Higher Education South Africa (HESA) is pleased to announce that its request for a 10-month extension of the HEAIDS Programme has been approved by the European Commission and the Department of Education.[Read More]
 
An HIV prevalence survey, which aims to involve 25 000 students and staff members at South Africa's public institutions of higher education, is currently underway.

South African Higher Education’s response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic will be discussed at a symposium on 1 April during the 4th SA AIDS Conference in Durban from 31 March to 3 April 2009.

A Policy Framework on HIV and AIDS for Higher Education Institutions in South Africa was adopted by the Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, and the 23 public sector higher education institutions in South Africa in October 2008.
